Transfer or Car Hire?

For a holiday on the Turkish Aegean, which actually makes more sense — a private transfer or a hire car? An honest comparison.

ARVIPTRANSFER

This is a genuine question rather than a marketing one, and the honest answer is that it depends on the trip. Here is how the two options compare on the things that actually decide it.

When a hire car wins

If you plan to move around — several towns, beaches away from the resort, day trips inland — a car gives you freedom that no transfer can match. Over a fortnight of touring it is also usually cheaper.

When a transfer wins

If you are going to one hotel and staying there, a hire car spends the week in the car park while you pay for it. Add parking in places like Alaçatı, where the centre is pedestrianised, and the economics turn quickly.

The arrival day is its own case

Driving an unfamiliar car on unfamiliar roads after a flight, at night, with tired children, is the least appealing part of any hire arrangement. A common compromise is a transfer on arrival and departure with a hire car picked up locally for the middle days.

The costs people forget

With a hire car: fuel, motorway tolls, parking, the insurance excess and the deposit blocked on your card. With a transfer: nothing beyond the agreed fare, and no deposit at all.

How to decide

Ask yourself how many days you will actually drive. If the answer is two out of ten, a transfer plus a short local hire is almost always the better arrangement.
